At Wild Gros Morne we do things a little different. We are always thinking outside the box, taking a creative approach to how we design our offerings. Life can be hectic and we understand the importance of getting away from it all to refresh and reconnect with the things that truly matter. With this in mind, we’ve developed a unique off grid backcountry cabin experience that immerses our guests in a breathtaking mountain environment while encouraging a sense of true wilderness adventure or quiet unplugged relaxation.

High in the Long Range Mountains our backcountry cabins are located at the terminus of the tree line on a remote glacier carved pond. The only traffic you’ll find here is the odd snowmobiler, skier or herd of caribou heading up towards the barrens. Located Smack dab in the heart of the Western Newfoundland snow globe, and just mintues from the breathtaking Lomond Sinkhole. Hundreds of kilometers of snowmobiling, backcountry skiing and snowshoeing trails can be found right on the door step, making this a true winter lovers paradise.

Our Sinkhole Lodge is the perfect base camp for your backcountry adventures. On the cabins main level is a large bedroom with room to store your personal gear, and 2 adult sized bunk beds complete with cozy down duvets that can sleep 4 adults quite comfortably. An open concept living room and full kitchen comes equipped with everything you need to prepare a hearty meal. A propane range, fridge, wood stove and table with bench seating can easily seat 6 adults. A half bath with vanity, storage and flush toilet round out the main level. Upstairs is a warm rustic open loft equipped with a double bed, a cozy down duvet and hands down one of the best mountain views on the island.

Spend your days exploring the Gros Morne backcountry and your evenings reconnecting with family, friends and loved ones next to the crackling of the wood stove.

In order to familiarize our guests with off grid living and the unique environment around our cabin your Wild Gros Morne Backcountry Cabin Experience also includes

  • An experienced local guide that will meet you in our designated parking area and lead you to the cabin
  • A hands on training program reviewing the unique and quirky features of your cabin and how to comfortably live off grid will be provided
  • A tour of the immediate area around the cabin will be given to show the ski and snowmobile routes, the bowl, Lomond sinkhole and other scenic destinations (a map will also be supplied)
  • The wood stove will be lit and the cabin warmed up prior to your arrival (wood is provided for the weekend)
  • Water will be collected from the local spring and stored in the cabin (we will also show you the water source in case you do need more)
  • Cell reception is weak and intermittent at the cabin so we will also show you areas close by with more dependable service should an emergency arise
  • The cabin comes outfitted with 1 double bed, 2 sets of bunk beds, clean linens and comfy duvets.A full kitchen with dishes, utensils, pots and pans, and indoor bathroom with flushable toilet. There is also a great selection of board games and books should the weather keep you storm bound for a day or two
  • One tank of fuel for the generator will be provided. We suggest only turning on the generator in the night, or if you need a quick bit of power during the day. Turn off the generator before bed and one tank of gas in our efficient Honda generator can provide 2-3 nights electricity when used conservatively. Guests will be responsible for any additional fuel needed
  • Once everyone in your party is comfortable and our guide is satisfied you are familiar with the cabin operations, we will say our goodbyes and your Off Grid Backcountry cabin experience can truly begin!
